1. Analox GM9 glucose analyser as replacement for the Beckman Glucose 2.

One of the worlds best known clinical glucose analysers, the Beckman Glucose 2 has been discontinued along with the reagent required to operate it and spare parts.  Both Beckman and Analox clinical analysers appeared the same year, 1974.  The Analox analyser in its current model, the GM9, remains in production and is available ex-stock from Analox Instruments UK and many Analox distributors worldwide.  The GM9 produces plasma glucose results exactly equivalent to the Beckman with the added advantage that the reagent consumption is half that of the Beckman.  Additionally the Analox analyser can be used for whole blood samples if the appropriate blood collection tubes or capillaries are used.  Yet another advantage is that samples as small as 2.5ul can be utilised: particularly useful in small organism research work.  The GM9 is in fact one of the most economical glucose analysers available worldwide with a reagent cost per test of  about €0.12 ($0.16c US).

For those workers who wish to continue using their Beckman analysers meanwhile, Analox is providing an equivalent glucose reagent specially formulated for the Beckman.  This is designated GMRD-300 for a 250ml bottle and is available ex-stock.

2. New Reagent Kit for Fast Determination of Plasma 3-Hydroxybutyrate (3-HB):

The reformulated Analox 3-Hydroxybutyrate reagent kit offers a fast, extremely simple, and
accurate measurement of this important plasma ketone. The assay is linear over the range
100-5000µmol/L (2-52mg/dl). A printed result is obtained within 20 seconds of sample injection
following a brief pre-reaction.

3-Hydroxybutyrate is the major product of ketosis (nearly 80%). It occurs whenever energy
demand exceeds glucose availability and is critical in both human and animal healthcare. In the
treatment of diabetic ketosis with insulin, blood 3-HB falls some 2 hours before glucose. Thus
over-treatment can be avoided. Monitoring 3-HB in pregnant diabetic patients is also important.
Similarly in starvation and any acute illness. Also in monitoring a ketogenic diet used to control
some types of childhood epilepsy.

The new Analox method offers probably the simplest enzymatic 3-HB assay currently available,
requiring a single sample, single point calibration and a single injection.

3. Measurement of Methanol and Glycerol in Pichia Pastoris Fermentation:

The Analox GL6 and GM8 industrial multiassay analysers offer fast and accurate determination of methanol and glycerol in pichia pastoris cell cultures, to ensure optimum levels of these key carbon sources in this widely used application. Both assays are linear to ca. 4% W/V and the reagent kits include a 2.0% W/V calibration standard.

Further information on the methanol and glycerol reagent kits can be found in the
Industrial & Biotechnology section of this site.
